When the evil Bowser steals 120 power stars and traps Princess Peach within the walls of her own castle, it's up to Mario to save her once again. Bowser has infiltrated Peach's Castle, and stole the power of the Stars, leaving the Princess and all of her friends trapped in the castle walls; so Mario sets out to retrieve the 120 Stars and defeat the Koopa King once again. This game has done what some considered to be impossible, which is somehow transition from 2D to 3D without losing a single thing of what made the franchise great to begin with. In fact, this game actually may have added more things that make it stand out as one of the best games ever. The visuals are fantastic and full of life, especially for 1996. The gameplay is amazing, as Mario controls so well and just feels right, which is shocking for this being the first 3D Mario game. The music in this game is great and well composed, and fits everything really well. Each stage and world look fantastic and they're all well designed. The boss battles are fun and great for the time. Overall, this game is fantastic, and it is truly one of, if not the most shockingly great game ever, especially for it being the first 3D game in the series. I have to give serious props to Nintendo, as they transitioned from 2D to 3D, and made a masterpiece from it, as this game is one of, if not the best 3D crossover ever. Yes, that's right, it is. I firmly believe that the N64 and the weird looking controller were both designed just so this game could be made. It was amazing the first time I saw it, with its huge environments and colorful characters, and its amazing now. The play control is perfect, the graphics are beautiful, and it has that Nintendo charm that is always so intangible but undeniably there. A must have for any N64 owner, and a reason to get an N64 for everyone else.
